  1. Get rid of excess product: If there is any powdered make-up product spilled on your clothes, don’t try to rub it off. It will spread to other areas and delve into the fabric. Instead, use a blow dryer in a cold setting and remove the excess powder from the garment. Don’t use hot air as it will make the powder set in the fabric. Then move ahead to remove the make-up stain. In case there is a cream-based product, you can scrape it off using your fingernails, knife or other such objects. Make sure you don’t push it into the fabric or spread it onto a larger area. 
  1. Do a spot test: Even though most of the stain removers that we are going to mention ahead are safe to use on almost all fabrics, you should still do a spot test. Apply the stain remover to a hidden part of the garment such as inside the collar or hem. Wait for 10-20 minutes to see how the fabric reacts. Things You’ll Need

  • White cloth or Paper towel
  • Detergent or Dish wash liquid
  • Soap (Face soap/ detergent bar/ dish wash soap)
  • Dampen the stain: Take a clean white cloth or microfiber towel. Dip it into the water and start dabbing the stain using this cloth or paper towel to make the area damp. 
  • Apply soap or detergent: Pour 2-3 drops of liquid detergent or dish wash liquid directly onto the stain. If you using a soap bar then you can rub it all over the stain. The key is to cover the stain.
  • Rub the fabric: Hold the underside of the stain between your fingers in a way that you can rub the stained fabric against itself. Keeping rubbing until the stain is visible.
  • Wipe away the residue: Dampen a clean, white cloth. Use this cloth to wipe away the soapy residue from the fabric. Repeat until there is no residue.
  • Rinse and wash as usual: Rinse the stained area with clean and cool water and wash the garment as usual.

  • Cotton swabs
  • If you are using a makeup wipe then blot the stain until the makeup is completely lifted on it. 
  • If you are using a liquid makeup remover, then pour it on a cotton swab. 
  • Gently blot the stain using this cotton swab.
  • Keep blotting until the stain is gone or the cotton swab is filled with the makeup product. 
  • If the stain is still visible and the cotton swab has acquired a lot of makeup product in it, don’t use it further. 
  • Take another cotton swab and repeat the process until the stain goes away. 

This technique works best when the stain is fresh and makeup is not delved into the fabric.

Remove makeup stains from clothes using a shaving cream or foam

Things You’ll Need

Shaving cream or shaving foam

Caution: Do not use a shaving gel for this technique as it will not have the same effect on the fabric.

  • Apply the shaving cream or spray the foam directly onto the stain. The quantity should be just enough to cover the stain. 
  • Let it sit for 4-5 minutes. The ingredients in shaving products will break down the makeup product. 
  • Then rub the fabric near the stain against itself to spread cream or foam. 
  • Rinse the stained area with clean and cold water to remove the residue. 
  • Wash the garment as usual. 
  • We do not recommend using this method to remove makeup stains from wool. 

Remove makeup stains from clothes using ice

Things You’ll Need

  • Ice cube
  • Paper towel
  • White cloth

 

  • Press an ice cube onto the stain. You can hold an ice cube with a help of a handkerchief or any other fabric. 
  • Start rubbing it onto the stain in a circular motion. 
  • Stop rubbing when the stain starts lifting up from the fabric. 
  • Take a clean, white cloth or a paper towel and blot the wet area gently. 
  • Repeat the process until the stain is no longer visible.

If the stain has left minor residue behind and you can repeat the method. In case it still persists, you can soak the garment in bleach overnight. However, make sure that the fabric is bleach-safe. 

Here is what you can do:

  1. Choose a bleach as per the type of fabric and colour. You can read our blog: All About Using Bleach In Laundry, to know which type of bleach you should use on a specific fabric.
  2. Take a bucket with 10 litres capacity and fill it with water. 
  3. Add 2 tablespoons of bleach to this bucket and mix with your hands. You can wear rubber gloves if you have sensitive skin, cuts or injuries on your hands.
  4. Soak the garment in the bucket of water and leave it overnight. 
  5. Take out the garment the next morning and rinse it with cool water. The stains will be gone. 
  6. Now, wash the garment as usual.

Pro-tip: Do not place a garment into the dryer machine or hot water before makeup stain removal. Both of these things will set the stain strongly. 

If you don’t have time to use any of these things, you can stain remover pens. They contain stain remover solution which is suitable for almost all fabrics. Just remove excess makeup product from the fabric and use a stain remover pen on the affected area. Don’t forget to do a spot test before using it and wash the garment as soon as you can.
